Football Pitch Preparation

Folding Dew Brush (3m) Demo On Golf Course

With the Euros over and England breaking their 55 year curse, the demand is now placed back on the football pitches for the plethora of league games for the 2021/22 season. Now is the right time to start thinking about improving your pitch, this will then give your pitch a reasonable level of resilience, as well as achieving the desired performance standards.

In this blog we are going to discuss a few ways in which you can prepare your football pitch ready for the new season.

When it comes to deep spiking your football pitch, you need to penetrate to around 300mm, it is important to consider that if you have any underground heating or pipes then you should have it at a depth of 250mm.

In some cases, you can apply sand before you spike as the sand will help to dry out the surface, providing a better grip for the tyres. You may need to add top dressing after the vertidrain operation, but this will depend on how much material is needed for your desired standard.

It is essential to aerate regularly to ensure turfgrass quality is maintained throughout the playing seasons. Not carrying out this process can result in lost or cancelled fixtures which can then impact the club, leading to a lost revenue for the facility.

Turfgrass is grown in a medium with a blend of soil and sand that provides a suitable environment for plant growth. The growing medium, also known as the rootzone is made up of differing proportions of soil solids and soil pores. It is so important to maintain the correct balance of these components is critical for sustaining healthy plant growth.

Surface Preparation

Once you have followed the steps above you should then clean your turf surface by tearing out any annual meadow grass and trailing weeds, such as knotweed or clovers. There are many different tools that you can use for this, you just need to find the right one for you and experiment with the different levels. This operation gets carried out on most football pitches, one being at Chelsea F.C in February 1999 where the surface was removed prior to it being re-turfed.

Avoid Diseases

You need to take a careful watch out for diseases on your lawn. To help prevent this, make sure your grass is kept relatively dry and free from dew, this way you will make sure that the air circulation and light levels are maintained.
