A decent soil sampler is one of the most essential tools for any greenkeeper or groundsman. Our 1.5″ (38mm) Soil Sampler is a simple, robust tool designed for general purpose work when you need a larger, clearer sample.

The wider diameter provides a substantial core that’s easy to examine without disturbance. Check for compaction, analyse root growth, measure thatch depth, and see exactly what’s happening beneath the surface. The large cut-out window in the tine makes inspecting and ejecting the sample straightforward – no messing about.

Built in our UK workshop, the sampler features a solid steel construction with a T-bar handle for good grip and a foot peg for extra leverage when the ground is firm. It’s a workhorse tool built to last.

As a practical bonus, many groundsmen also use this tool to create the perfect-sized hole for installing BMS ground sockets for posts and rope stakes, making it a handy dual-purpose addition to the shed.

How It Works

  • Position the sampler vertically on the area of turf you want to inspect.
  • Place your foot on the foot peg and apply firm, steady pressure to drive the tine into the ground.
  • Twist the T-bar handle 90 degrees and pull upwards to remove the tool and the soil core.
  • Examine the core through the large cut-out window.
  • To remove the core, simply tap the tool or use your fingers to slide it out.

FAQ

Q: What’s the main benefit of a 1.5-inch sampler over a smaller one?

A: The wider core gives you a much clearer, less disturbed view of the soil profile, making it easier to accurately assess thatch, root structure and moisture content.

Q: Is it difficult to get the core out?

A: No, the large open window on the side of the tine is designed for easy inspection and removal of the soil core.

Q: What is it made from?

A: It’s made here in the UK from durable steel to ensure it can handle regular use on the course or pitch.
